Waiting for Baby

So we're down to 3 weeks until the due date. Which means that the baby could arrive any day now. Antici...pation! Now all we need to do is figure out how to be parents (and pick names, and write a birth plan, and set up the room, and figure out the diaper system, and ...)

Despite our anxieties, we are both extremely excited. Tonight we tried out the baby product known as a "hippie sling." This is a long piece of cloth used to cleverly swaddle the child to the parent. We practiced on the stuffed bunny - it was pretty cute.

Anyway, in honor of the impending birth, click the link below to see baby's first pictures.
The first is from very early in the pregnancy (about six weeks) -- our baby is just a little tadpole.

The second one is from earlier this summer (about halfway through) and now you can see the head and feet. These pictures really highlight for me how truly amazing this whole process is. At times it seems like an absolute miracle that it (human development) works at all. This is probably my physics bias coming out. The whole process, and indeed, all of us, are the result of molecules bumping into each other and doing really, really clever things.

Biology is awesome.

Hi Mom and Lis - we can't wait for you to meet baby either :)

Eh, forget the birthing plan. Books make it sound like you NEED one... but if it's a hassle, don't do it. Just discuss in advance what level of pain meds you want, so that Tim with the clear head can follow through on it if necessary. Although, we didn't play special music or anything.

wait, what do you mean 'write a birth plan'? what is such a thing? and yes, crazy exciting :)

Hi Sarah -- you'd be surprised how many potential decisions there are for you to make. Some people write out a birth plan ahead of time to hand to the hospital staff explaining all about pain medication and fetal monitoring and what happens after birth and a million other things. Of course, the best laid plans...

Hi Andy -- We'll probably write a short birth plan, but we got a good vibe from the hospital nurse about how flexible they're willing to be so we're not feeling too stressed about needing it all in writing. We're trying to do the whole natural childbirth thing, but of course, we'll see how that goes :)

This is Rachel btw.

I've heard the hippie sling is awesome for carrying around baby. Warren's sister got one while she was visiting Fort Collins at the recommendation of a customer using one in a baby store, but as of yet hasn't quite figured it out yet. (Good thing you guys are practicing.)

Hi Rachel -- yeah, its kind of complicated. Also, I'm sure it's waaay easier with a stuffed rabbit than with a squirming infant.
